Protecting the health of sports players

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI)
Full recovery after concussion and MTBIs can often be expected, though neurorehabilitation will assist the recovery process. If you or a member of your team/organisation are struggling to cope with a recent injury, or recovery is taking longer than expected, a referral to our specialist service may be helpful.
Short-term interventions including fatigue management, neurologically-led physiotherapy, cognitive strategies, work-based adaptations and mood management, can all aid recovery and prevent the adoption of unhelpful coping strategies.
We tailor input to your needs from a one-off advice session with one of our Clinical Neuropsychologists, through to full multidisciplinary neurorehabilitation with a goal-based treatment plan, and liaison with your team’s/organisation’s medical adviser.
Long-term neurological health
Repeated head trauma has become a major concern for sports institutions in recent years as they increasingly prioritise the health and wellbeing of their players.
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and its clinical presentation, Traumatic Encephalopathy Syndrome (TES), is currently at the forefront of research to determine its relevance to sports players.
There is still much to learn about TES but here’s how we can help:
- We conduct thorough and objective measurement of multiple thinking skills, such as attention, memory, language, processing speed, and higher-level cognitive skills. This helps to detect acute, permanent and early signs of cognitive difficulties associated with possible neurodegenerative conditions.
- We can complete baseline testing before symptoms appear, providing a benchmark for subsequent assessments to track changes in cognitive abilities over time.
- We provide multiple evaluations over time to assess cognitive change, and to appraise treatment efficacy.
- We assess neurobehavioural and mood-related consequences through psychometric evaluation, offering a holistic understanding of the individual’s wellbeing.
- Following a diagnosis, we offer supportive education and rehabilitation strategies tailored to each person’s unique needs.

A massive thanks to Totus and the team for their support with my memory test.
As a pro boxer it can be worrying getting these tests done as our livelihood is at stake but Emma, Helen and the team were extremely understanding. It was easy to get booked in and they worked around my needs to make the situation as stress-free as possible.”

Our Neuropsychological Assessments for Sports are set at a fixed fee and include a full assessment report.
At Totus Neurorehabilitation, we have been working with the British Boxing Board of Control to implement a standardised protocol for the regular assessment of boxers as part of their licensing process. We hope that a consistent assessment approach will provide improved monitoring of neurological health and a gold standard for cognitive assessments.
“…because neuropsychological testing has been shown to be sensitive to sports-related concussions in cases where the results of other medical exams (e.g., neuroimaging and neurologic exam) are normal, it is recommended that baseline and serial neuropsychological assessments be regularly employed to monitor changes in neurocognitive status throughout a boxer’s career.”
