Samantha Cooper

Sam is a highly experienced independent Speech and Language Therapist specialising in adult communication and swallowing rehabilitation, with over twenty years of clinical expertise.

After graduating in Leeds, she started her career in London before returning home to Devon. Her career path included a valuable year working in New Zealand, providing unique insights into healthcare delivery outside the NHS. In 2022, she set up as an independent practitioner, bringing my neurological rehabilitation expertise directly to clients in the community.

Sam has comprehensive experience in managing complex neurological caseloads across diverse settings, including acute hospital wards, community clinics, nursing homes, and clients’ own homes. Her particular expertise lies in supporting adults with conditions arising from stroke, acquired brain injury, brain tumours, and dementia. She specialises in addressing speech disorders, aphasia, dysphagia (swallowing), reading and writing difficulties, cognitive communication disorders, and conducting formal Mental Capacity Assessments for the Court of Protection.

Sam’s commitment to evidence-based practice is fundamental to her approach, supported by ongoing professional development and research engagement. She serves on the committee for the Computers in Therapy Clinical Excellence Network, contributing to the advancement of technology in therapeutic practice. Additionally, she is a Principal Investigator on the Confirming the Mechanism of Motivational Interviewing Therapy after Stroke (COMMITS) trial at the University of Central Lancashire, furthering our understanding of effective stroke rehabilitation techniques.

Throughout her career she has maintained a commitment to empowering adults to reach their full potential through personalised assessment and therapy.
